This summer, how about a lush, green lawn perfect for a barefoot stroll? DAIRY DOO® can help get you there, without the use of herbicides and pesticides. That’s right! A lawn that is kid and pet-friendly, picnic-ready, AND easy to achieve!
Getting Started with Your Lawn Care
Decide what portion of your lawn you want to focus on this year. Are you just tackling the front yard or the back yard too? After you’ve decided how much you will work on this year, keep our handy calculator close by to help you determine how much product you will need.
Springtime Lawn Care
In the spring, apply an ⅛ inch of DAIRY DOO across your lawn. You can use a spreader or sprinkle it by the shovel full, taking care to use a rake to spread it around. Leaving piles of DAIRY DOO will create patches in your lawn so be sure to take the time to spread it evenly.
For every 1,000 square feet of lawn, plan to use 11 cubic feet of DAIRY DOO. For small lawns or projects we have bags available that each contain 1 cubic foot. When working on larger projects, you can buy DAIRY DOO by bulk in super sacks or truckloads.
For best results, aerate your lawn with solid tines after applying DAIRY DOO. This will drive the compost into the lawn where it can begin adding nutrients and organic matter to the soil.
PRO TIP: Don’t use a hollow tine. A hollow tine will pull up dormant weed seeds from underground allowing them to grow.
Get Rid of the Weeds
The best defense against weeds is to crowd them out. Healthy, full grass naturally resists weed growth.
This can be achieved by reseeding your lawn every 6 weeks, starting in the spring. Choose a grass seed appropriate for your location and spread with a seed spreader or by hand. Next, water your lawn well.
Another important tool in weed control is cutting your grass. Weeds thrive in short grasses. Tall grasses crowd out and shade out weeds, preventing their growth.
Commit to mowing your lawn only once a week and raise your mower deck to cut grass at 3 ½ inches or higher. Make sure your mower blades are sharp so they are cutting the grass and not tearing it- another way to keep your grass healthier.
Summer Lawn Care
In the summer, fertilize your lawn to keep the nutrients high and stress levels low in your grasses. To keep your lawn care completely organic and chemical free, use Safe Green Lawn granulated fertilizer.
Safe Green Lawn uses DAIRY DOO and a humate-packed formula to deliver a biologically healthy lawn without the use of phosphorus or chemicals. This granulated fertilizer works with new or existing lawns and is safe for use around kids, pets, lakes, rivers, and streams. Spread Safe Green Lawn with a broadcast spreader 3 times during the summer at a rate of 10 lb per 1,000 square feet.
DAIRY DOO also offers an easy-to-use liquid fertilizer called TurfBlaster. While this option cannot be considered organic, it still uses natural ingredients like sea kelp to aide root health.
Apply TurfBlaster in the cool of the day every 7-14 days by simply attaching the garden hose to the quart jug and watering your lawn. No mixing or spreaders are required. TurfBlaster is also available in 2 ½ gallon jugs, 55-gallon drums, 250 gallon totes, and tankers.
Continue mowing only once per week, raising your mower deck to cut the grass at 3 ½ inches, and reseeding your lawn every 6 weeks or so.
Patching
If you find your lawn is patchy from either changing lawn furniture or landscaping or due to pet waste in the lawn, you can give these areas an additional boost.
Topsoil Blend is an affordable and quality soil for landscaping needs. It is powered by DAIRY DOO with a perfect mix of peat and topsoil. Use it to fill holes and level off low spots. After filling the area in, spread grass seed and water thoroughly.
For smaller patches, like those left from pet waste, apply a thin layer of Seed Starter 101 potting soil over the area. Spread area with grass seed and water thoroughly.
What About Grub Damage?
Lawn Grubs, also known as White Grubs, will destroy the root system of your lawn. They will kill grasses and their presence will attract animals like moles, skunks, and raccoons to dig up your dead yard looking for a midnight snack.
Lawns that fall victim to heavy grub damage are already unhealthy. Healthy lawns will outgrow the feeding grubs and will withstand their presence. By focusing on soil health and the nutrients to aide root growth, you’ll create a lawn that is able to outlast grubs present underground.
Putting Your Yard to Bed for Winter
As fall comes the leaves begin to drop. Instead of removing them from your yard, mow over your leaves with sharp blades. Leave the chopped leaves on your yard and as they break down they will add nitrogen and organic matter to your soil. This means you’ll need less fertilizer next year and your lawn’s water retention will improve!
Apply one more treatment of DAIRY DOO, as you did in the spring. Spread DAIRY DOO at ⅛ of an inch across your lawn and aerate afterward using solid tines.
Rinse and Repeat
Follow these guidelines and watch your lawn’s color and consistency improve throughout the season. Each year your soil will become healthier and reveal the yard you always wanted!
