What’s Growing with Tom 2020: Assembling the Raised Beds

We aren’t planting yet, but we ARE getting the raised beds ready to go!

We recommend putting a layer of Topsoil Blend at the bottom of a raised bed and then covering it with a layer of newspapers to create a weed barrier.  The top 6-8 inches of the bed should be reserved for a weed-free and high-quality soil such as VeggieDoo 301 or FloerDoo 201.

How do you decide which one is right for you?  Simply decide in advance what you’ll be planting!  VeggieDoo 301 has the minerals plants need for better tasting veggies.  Meanwhile, FlowerDoo 201 has extra phosphorus for bigger and brighter blooms.  Both are organic so they are safe for you to be digging in and safe for growing edible plants.  Both are weed-free and both already contain DAIRY DOO (our organic thermophilic compost) and WormDOO (our organic worm castings) for a really well-rounded potting soil.

You can find both soils in bags or in loose bulk. If you aren’t sure how much you need, take measurements of your raised bed and then visit our DAIRY DOO Calculator.  It will give you the number of bags and the number of bulk cubic yards so you can decide which will work best for your project.

After topping off the beds with the right soil make sure you water them well, working the water into the soil to activate the first absorption.

That’s it!  You are ready to go once the weather turns warmer and it is safe from frost.  For all of these steps in a flyer format, click here!
